Historic hiring by BC EHS set to bring more paramedics to Northern BC

PRINCE GEORGE – After years of staffing challenges, and recruitment and retention battles, a historic amount of paramedics are set to be hired in Prince George and Northern BC.

“In my 33 years, I’ve never seen this many jobs posted at once,” says Troy Clifford, Provincial President of CUPE Local 873 which represents the Ambulance Paramedics of BC and Emergency Dispatchers of BC.

Others involved in the industry say they’ve never seen anything like this either.

Eight more regular full-time paramedics are set to be hired here in Prince George, those new members will help to staff three new ambulances now in the city as well.

The benefits of more funding stretch far beyond the city limits as well, with Burns Lake, Chetwynd, Houston, Fort St James, Fort Nelson, and Vanderhoof all moving to 24/7 staffing levels.

The hiring blitz follows a mass restructuring of BC Emergency Health Services in July following the deadly heatwave which claimed the lives of hundreds of British Columbians.
