Labour Strike – Hard Rock Casino Coquitlam

Dear Members;

Re: Labour Strike – Hard Rock Casino Coquitlam

Members should be advised of an ongoing labour dispute with the BC Government Employees Union (BCGEU) and their Employer at the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam. The BCGEU workers are in a legal strike position currently and have withdrawn their services. A legal picket line has been established at this location. I write to you today to advise on when and when not to cross this picket line.

Non-Emergency Situations

In the case of non-emergency events CUPE 873 members will not cross this picket line to perform work. This includes pre-planned special events where paramedics are contracted to provide medical standby coverage. If assigned a non-emergency shift which would require you to cross the picket line, CUPE 873 members should report for duty and attend the work location. On arrive at the site, report to the picket captain and confirm you will not cross the picket line. Then report to your supervisor that you are on-site, but not crossing the picket line. If you have any questions or receive and pressure from the Employer to cross, please contact your RVP immediately.

Emergency Situations

In the case of working an emergency ambulance you’re tasked with a pre-hospital emergency response, CUPE 873 will respond without delay. On arrival, report to the picket captain and advise that you are responding to a medical emergency. The captain will permit you to cross without objection. If you do receive any objection from the picketing BCGEU members, please contact your RVP immediately after the emergency response is completed.

Thank you for your attention to this matter and your solidarity for your BCGEU brothers and sisters who are on strike for better working conditions.

Sincerely,

Cameron Eby
