Canadian Blood Services blood request

Canadian Blood Services blood request

Winter storms in many parts of Canada have impacted collections and our ability to safely distribute blood products.

Heavy snowfall, extreme cold and icy conditions in many parts of Canada over the last few days have led to a shortfall of about 1,500, or 10 per cent, of our expected blood and plasma collections. In addition, winter cold and flu season is upon us, and our cancellation rates have jumped significantly.

Platelets are of particular concern because they have a shelf life of only seven days, so it’s not possible to stock up. This is just one reason why regular blood donations are critical.

We are urging donors from all communities, who can safely get to a donor centre, to book an appointment as soon as possible.

We anticipate disruptions to continue in the weeks ahead. Looming winter storms threaten to further impact collections and our ability to move products across the country due to road closures and suspended air travel and ferry services.

We are calling on you to help keep Canada’s Lifeline strong.

We are so grateful to all of you for your perseverance throughout the past few years. As a volunteer, you are one of our greatest ambassadors, which is why we are asking for your help.

You can help us spread the word by sharing the need for blood, plasma and platelet donors with your family, friends and social circles. Another option is to share the social media posts from our national and/or regional accounts that encourage donors to make and keep appointments.

With your help, we can replenish our low reserves of blood, plasma and platelets for patients.

We thank you for your support today and always. You don’t just make a difference, you make all the difference.

Sincerely,

Your Provincial Executive Committee
